Sins of the Father

EZEKIEL 18:1-24, 30-32

1 The word of the LORD came to me…, saying,
2 “What do you mean when you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?
3 “As I live,” says the Lord GOD, “you shall no longer use this proverb in Israel.
4 “Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine; the soul who sins shall die.
5 But if a man is just and does what is lawful and right;
6 If he has not eaten on the mountains, nor lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, nor defiled his neighbor’s wife, nor approached a woman during her impurity;
7 If he has not oppressed anyone, but has restored to the debtor his pledge; has robbed no one by violence, but has given his bread to the hungry and covered the naked with clothing;
8 If he has not exacted usury nor taken any increase, but has withdrawn his hand from iniquity and executed true judgment between man and man;
9 If he has walked in My statutes and kept My judgments faithfully– he is just; he shall surely live!” Says the Lord GOD.
10 “If he begets a son who is a robber or a shedder of blood, who does any of these things
11 And does none of those duties, but has eaten on the mountains or defiled his neighbor’s wife;
12 If he has oppressed the poor and needy, robbed by violence, not restored the pledge, lifted his eyes to the idols, or committed abomination;
13 If he has exacted usury or taken increase– shall he then live? He shall not live! If he has done any of these abominations, he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.
14 “If, however, he begets a son who sees all the sins which his father has done, and considers but does not do likewise;
15 Who has not eaten on the mountains, nor lifted his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, nor defiled his neighbor’s wife;
16 Has not oppressed anyone, nor withheld a pledge, nor robbed by violence, but has given his bread to the hungry and covered the naked with clothing;
17 Who has withdrawn his hand from the poor and not received usury or increase, but has executed My judgments and walked in My statutes– he shall not die for the iniquity of his father; he shall surely live!
18 “As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother by violence, and did what is not good among his people, behold, he shall die for his iniquity.
19 “Yet you say, ‘Why should the son not bear the guilt of the father?’ Because the son has done what is lawful and right, and has kept all My statutes and done them, he shall surely live.
20 “The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
21 “But if a wicked man turns from all his sins which he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is lawful and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die.
22 “None of the transgressions which he has committed shall be remembered against him; because of the righteousness which he has done, he shall live.
23 “Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?” says the Lord GOD, “and not that he should turn from his ways and live?
24 “But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? All the righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; because of the unfaithfulness of which he is guilty and the sin which he has committed, because of them he shall die.
30 “…I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways,” says the Lord GOD. “Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin.
31 “Cast away from you all the transgressions which you have committed, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O house of Israel?
32 “For I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies,” says the Lord GOD. “Therefore turn and live!”

EXODUS 20:4-6

4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

EXODUS 34:4-7

4 …Moses rose early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him…
5 Now the LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD.
6 And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,
7 “keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”

LEVITICUS 26:40-42

40 ‘But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, with their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, and that they also have walked contrary to Me,
41 and that I also have walked contrary to them and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if their uncircumcised hearts are humbled, and they accept their guilt–
42 then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham I will remember; I will remember the land.

NUMBERS 14:26-33

26 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
27 “How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who murmur against Me? I have heard the complaints which the children of Israel murmur against Me.
28 “Say to them, ‘As I live,’ says the LORD, ‘just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you:
29 ‘The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above.
30 ‘Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I swore I would make you dwell in.
31 ‘But your little ones, whom you said would be victims, I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised.
32 ‘But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness.
33 ‘And your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and bear the brunt of your infidelity, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness.

JOB 21:7-30

7 Why do the wicked live and become old, yes, become mighty in power?
8 Their descendants are established with them in their sight, and their offspring before their eyes.
9 Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.
10 Their bull breeds without failure; their cow calves without miscarriage.
11 They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.
12 They sing to the tambourine and harp, and rejoice to the sound of the flute.
13 They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.
14 Yet they say to God, ‘Depart from us, for we do not desire the knowledge of Your ways.
15 Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him? And what profit do we have if we pray to Him?’
16 Indeed their prosperity is not in their hand; the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
17 “How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does their destruction come upon them, the sorrows God distributes in His anger?
18 They are like straw before the wind, and like chaff that a storm carries away.
19 They say, ‘God lays up one’s iniquity for his children’; let Him recompense him, that he may know it.
20 Let his eyes see his destruction, and let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
21 For what does he care about his household after him, when the number of his months is cut in half?
22 “Can anyone teach God knowledge, since He judges those on high?
23 One dies in his full strength, being wholly at ease and secure;
24 His pails are full of milk, and the marrow of his bones is moist.
25 Another man dies in the bitterness of his soul, never having eaten with pleasure.
26 They lie down alike in the dust, and worms cover them.
27 “Look, I know your thoughts, and the schemes with which you would wrong me.
28 For you say, ‘Where is the house of the prince? And where is the tent, the dwelling place of the wicked?’
29 Have you not asked those who travel the road? And do you not know their signs?
30 For the wicked are reserved for the day of doom; they shall be brought out on the day of wrath.

PSALM 21:8-11

8 Your hand will find all Your enemies; your right hand will find those who hate You.
9 You shall make them as a fiery oven in the time of Your anger; the LORD shall swallow them up in His wrath, and the fire shall devour them.
10 Their offspring You shall destroy from the earth, and their descendants from among the sons of men.
11 For they intended evil against You; they devised a plot which they are not able to perform.

PSALM 37:23-31

23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and He delights in his way.
24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the LORD upholds him with His hand.
25 I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread.
26 He is ever merciful, and lends; and his descendants are blessed.
27 Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell forevermore.
28 For the LORD loves justice, and does not forsake His saints; they are preserved forever, but the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off.
29 The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell in it forever.
30 The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and his tongue talks of justice.
31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.

PSALM 78:5-8

5 …He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children;
6 That the generation to come might know them, the children who would be born, that they may arise and declare them to their children,
7 That they may set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments;
8 And may not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not set its heart aright, and whose spirit was not faithful to God.

PSALM 103:17-18

17 …the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children,
18 To such as keep His covenant, and to those who remember His commandments to do them.

PSALM 115:12-15

12 The LORD has been mindful of us; he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will bless those who fear the LORD, both small and great.
14 May the LORD give you increase more and more, you and your children.
15 May you be blessed by the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

ISAIAH 65:1-9

1 “I was sought by those who did not ask for Me; I was found by those who did not seek Me. I said, ‘Here I am, here I am,’ to a nation that was not called by My name.
2 I have stretched out My hands all day long to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, according to their own thoughts;
3 A people who provoke Me to anger continually to My face; who sacrifice in gardens, and burn incense on altars of brick;
4 Who sit among the graves, and spend the night in the tombs; who eat swine’s flesh, and the broth of abominable things is in their vessels;
5 Who say, ‘Keep to yourself, do not come near me, for I am holier than you!’ These are smoke in My nostrils, a fire that burns all the day.
6 “Behold, it is written before Me: I will not keep silence, but will repay– even repay into their bosom–
7 Your iniquities and the iniquities of your fathers together,” says the LORD, “Who have burned incense on the mountains and blasphemed Me on the hills; therefore I will measure their former work into their bosom.”
8 Thus says the LORD: “As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one says, ‘Do not destroy it, for a blessing is in it,’ so will I do for My servants’ sake, that I may not destroy them all.
9 I will bring forth descendants from Jacob, and from Judah an heir of My mountains; my elect shall inherit it, and My servants shall dwell there.

JEREMIAH 31:29-34

29 “In those days they shall say no more: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’
30 “But every one shall die for his own iniquity; every man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.
31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah–
32 “not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD.
33 “But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
34 “No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

JEREMIAH 32:17-19

17 ‘Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.
18 ‘You show lovingkindness to thousands, and repay the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them– the Great, the Mighty God, whose name is the LORD of hosts.
19 ‘You are great in counsel and mighty in work, for your eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings.

LAMENTATIONS 5:1-5,7,15-17,19-21

1 Remember, O LORD, what has come upon us; look, and behold our reproach!
2 Our inheritance has been turned over to aliens, and our houses to foreigners.
3 We have become orphans and waifs, our mothers are like widows.
4 We pay for the water we drink, and our wood comes at a price.
5 …we labor and have no rest.
7 Our fathers sinned and are no more, but we bear their iniquities.
15 The joy of our heart has ceased; our dance has turned into mourning.
16 The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned!
17 Because of this our heart is faint; because of these things our eyes grow dim;
19 You, O LORD, remain forever; your throne from generation to generation.
20 Why do You forget us forever, and forsake us for so long a time?
21 Turn us back to You, O LORD, and we will be restored; renew our days as of old,

ROMANS 5:12-21

12 …just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned–
13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.
16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification.
17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)
18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life.
19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more,
21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
